Most evacuation orders called off in Los Angeles-area foothills after mudslide destroys homes
Updated 02:05 PM Feb 07, 2010
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. (AP) - Most evacuations in the Southern California foothills have been called off as an evening round of rains proved far milder than the fierce morning showers that brought mudslides and destroyed homes.

Los Angeles County Fire Insp. Steve Zermeno said only about 70 homes in one neighborhood of La Canada (cun-YAH'-duh) Flintridge remained under an evacuation order Saturday night.

All residents in La Crescenta, Acton, Sierra Madre and the rest of La Canada Flintridge were allowed back home.

About 800 homes across Los Angeles County were evacuated for much of Saturday.

Some of those returning will find homes damaged by mud and debris. The pre-dawn mud flow damaged at least 43 homes, and nine have been declared uninhabitable.

As residents dig out, mayor seeks federal help for mudslide clean-up
February 07, 2010 20:48 EST

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. (AP) -- Volunteers armed with shovels helped residents of one Southern California neighborhood dig out from the weekend's destructive mudslides.

Forty-three homes in the La Canada Flintridge area were damaged and 500 more evacuated yesterday after rain-triggered mudslides swept through the area. Residents returned home today to survey the damage.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger toured the area, saying the mud needs to be removed as quickly as possible. More rain is in Tuesday's forecast.

The mayor of La Canada Flintridge says the federal government should pay to help remove the mud that flowed down from federal land. She adds the city has received no assurances of help from federal authorities.
