…More about CERT

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

I have and continue to take many of FEMA’s Independent Study Programs

FEMA offers courses that support the nine mission areas identified by the National Preparedness Goal. Free Independant Study Courses

  • Incident Management
  • Operational Planning
  • Disaster Logistics
  • Emergency Communications
  • Continuity Programs
  • Public Disaster Communications
  • Integrated Preparedness
  • Hazard Mitigation
  • Service to Disaster Victims

My Future Goals

I have worked to hard to promote "Making the Corralation between disaster preparedness and blood donations" and would like to see blood & platelet donations included in the "to do" list for preparedness.

I would like to see FEMA, Ready.gov, AMR include the coraltion in their literature and public announcements. See my article on the front page for more details.

One accomplishment I have made is that since my first blood drive I have enlisted other neighborhood association to also hold blood drives with in their community not only in district 1 but continue to encourage all 10 districts within San Jose to hold blood drives as well.

My other job.

I am a wife and a mother of five boys between the ages of 13yrs to 26 yrs old.

I put them through home drills which I have written up to teach them preparedness.

Gotta make fun for the kids. They have to actually go through the motions as if a 7.0 earthquake had hit. from duck and cover to locating a food source and water source, our emergency kits, gobags, & call out of state conatcts. They start the generator, cook on the camp stove put a tent, each person must go through the drill alone, the others may NOT watch. it starts like this. Take one child to the drive way and say "a 7.0 earthquake just hit, what are you going to do? the house is off it's foundation and you can't go back inside, show me how you will survive, stay warm, be safe, and who will you call and what will you tell them? It takes about one hour and 15 minutes for each person. Completeing tasks will earn them points, the most points win $20.00. YES I bribe them... but it's worth it.

Emergency Preparedness Awareness Fair
Strawberry Park Drive
San Jose, CA xxxxx

Thank you for coordinating a well organized blood drive on September 13, 2008.  Your time, effort, and generosity are greatly appreciated!  The Strawberry Park Neighborhood was extremely helpful in keeping our blood supply stable following the lean months of summer.

Results of the blood drive for September 13, 2008:

Number presenting: 39
First time Stanford donors: 19
Deferrals: 3

Quantity Not Sufficient or low draw units:  2

Here is an example of just a few of the patients helped by blood donors one day last week:

There are 39 patients being seen in the out patient treatment area today. Most of these patients have some sort of cancer.  They are all in various stages of treatment…chemo, pre or post bone marrow transplant and have labs drawn daily.  Red Cell and Platelet transfusion are a possibility for each.

In the O.R. we have…

NEW BORN, MAJOR HEART REPAIR
INFANT, MAJOR HEART REPAIR
TODDLER, MAJOR HEART REPAIR

Please thank all of the donors that donated for their invaluable help.  We have countless patients who depend on the resources of the Blood Center to be available whenever needed.  You did a wonderful job recruiting donors (even the Mayor of San Jose came out and donated) -wow!  I am looking forward to the next Strawberry Park Neighborhood blood drive, it was a pleasure.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

A very impressive event. I was amazed with the amount of talent it took to pull it off. I was walking right in front of the mayor and got to hear the thorough presentation Patty gave him. Good show!

Dear SPNA,

We attended the Emergency Preparedness Awareness Fair and Blood Drive on
Saturday. It was a great event and I want to thank you for putting it
together!

My young daughter unfortunately lost her prescription eye glasses at the
event. If by any chance someone turned them in can you please let us know.

Thanks again for a terrific event... I even got my husband who is afraid of
needles to donate blood for the first time ever.

Event Announcements

An exert From Mayor Chuck Reed’s September 2008 Newsletter

Emergency Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month. Have you made a family emergency plan? Do you have basic survival items on hand? Experts recommend having supplies readily available such as a flashlight, batteries, water, non-perishable food, and a first aid kit to last at least 72 hours in case of a power outage, earthquake, or other emergency. If you are interested in learning how to properly prepare and manage for an emergency, the city's Office of Emergency Services provides training and information for San Jose residents. Through its program, San Jose Prepared!, the Office of Emergency Services provides 2-hour Disaster Preparedness Courses & 20-hour Community Emergency Response Training. In addition to San Jose Prepared! classes, these upcoming community events will feature resources on emergency preparedness:

An exert from Councilman Pete Constants September 3, 2008 newsletter One year ago, I formed the District 1 Leadership Group by inviting all of the leaders of District 1 neighborhood associations, business leaders, and faith-based organizations to come together and meet regularly. We schedule bimonthly meetings where members develop ideas to better their community. Leaders have emerged from these gatherings with a sense of purpose and ideas for resources to better educate their association members on a variety of issues, including one of the most urgent matters -- safety and emergency preparedness. One example is the newly formed Strawberry Park Neighborhood Association's efforts to reach their neighborhood through their upcoming "Emergency Preparedness Awareness Fair" on September 13, 2008.
