Thank you for coordinating a well organized blood drive on September 13, 2008. Your time, effort, and generosity are greatly appreciated! The Strawberry Park Neighborhood was extremely helpful in keeping our blood supply stable following the lean months of summer.
Results of the blood drive for September 13, 2008:
Number presenting: 39
First time Stanford donors: 19
Deferrals: 3
Quantity Not Sufficient or low draw units: 2

Here is an example of just a few of the patients helped by blood donors one day last week:
There are 39 patients being seen in the out patient treatment area today. Most of these patients have some sort of cancer. They are all in various stages of treatment…chemo, pre or post bone marrow transplant and have labs drawn daily. Red Cell and Platelet transfusion are a possibility for each.

A very impressive event. I was amazed with the amount of talent it took to pull it off. I was walking right in front of the mayor and got to hear the thorough presentation Patty gave him. Good show!

Dear SPNA,
We attended the Emergency Preparedness Awareness Fair and Blood Drive on
Saturday. It was a great event and I want to thank you for putting it
together!
My young daughter unfortunately lost her prescription eye glasses at the
event. If by any chance someone turned them in can you please let us know.
Thanks again for a terrific event... I even got my husband who is afraid of
needles to donate blood for the first time ever.

An exert From Mayor Chuck Reed’s September 2008 Newsletter
Emergency Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month. Have you made a family emergency plan? Do you have basic survival items on hand? Experts recommend having supplies readily available such as a flashlight, batteries, water, non-perishable food, and a first aid kit to last at least 72 hours in case of a power outage, earthquake, or other emergency.
If you are interested in learning how to properly prepare and manage for an emergency, the city's Office of Emergency Services provides training and information for San Jose residents. Through its program, San Jose Prepared!, the Office of Emergency Services provides 2-hour Disaster Preparedness Courses & 20-hour Community Emergency Response Training.
In addition to San Jose Prepared! classes, these upcoming community events will feature resources on emergency preparedness:

An exert from Councilman Pete Constants September 3, 2008 newsletter
One year ago, I formed the District 1 Leadership Group by inviting all of the leaders of District 1 neighborhood associations, business leaders, and faith-based organizations to come together and meet regularly. We schedule bimonthly meetings where members develop ideas to better their community. Leaders have emerged from these gatherings with a sense of purpose and ideas for resources to better educate their association members on a variety of issues, including one of the most urgent matters -- safety and emergency preparedness. One example is the newly formed Strawberry Park Neighborhood Association's efforts to reach their neighborhood through their upcoming "Emergency Preparedness Awareness Fair" on September 13, 2008.
